Lake Tahoe Spring Skiing: A Celebration of Snow, Sunshine and Fun

Attention all skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts! The 2022-23 season has been nothing short of epic, with a series of storms blanketing the slopes with fresh powder since early November. As the season moves into spring, the Truckee and Lake Tahoe areas are gearing up for a celebration of a winter well skied.

Spring skiing in Truckee and Lake Tahoe is a unique experience that you don't want to miss. It's a time to celebrate corn snow, warm sun and non-existent lift lines. Unlike new snow, corn snow is the beautiful transition of powder into frozen corn kernels that can be harvested when conditions are just right. What makes spring skiing in Truckee and Lake Tahoe so special is the weather. The storms that come with winter begin to subside as we approach the vernal equinox. This creates the special combination of cold nights and warm days. The combo of the two creates conditions that are elusive in most mountain ranges around the world. Fortunately for all of us in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, we are blessed with some of the best corn snow in the world, making spring the perfect time to visit. Not only can you experience a special side to skiing or snowboarding, but you can also easily combine it with mountain biking or standup paddleboarding.

Spring Skiing Options in Lake Tahoe

Palisades Tahoe

Palisades Tahoe proudly boasts being the Spring Skiing Capital, and for good reason. The resort consistently pushes to remain open until the snow melts, which can be as late as July 4th or even later. This dedication to providing late-season skiing opportunities has earned Palisades Tahoe a reputation as the ultimate spring skiing destination.

But Palisades Tahoe's crown as the Spring Skiing Capital is not just due to its impressive late-season operations. The resort's vibrant spring party scene also plays a significant role in solidifying its status as the top destination for spring skiing. As the snow starts to melt and the weather gets warmer, the resort comes alive with a range of events and activities, making it a perfect place to ski hard and party even harder.

This year, Palisades Tahoe has even more reason to celebrate, thanks to the huge amount of snowfall it has received. As a result, the resort is extending its operations into the summer months, with both Palisades and Alpine staying open through May 29, 2023. In June, Alpine will be open on weekends, and it will be the place where visitors can celebrate the Fourth of July in style.

Northstar California Resort

Northstar and Palisades are two contrasting experiences, with Northstar offering a more tranquil and rejuvenating atmosphere. The resort is situated amidst the trees, providing stunning views of the majestic Martis Valley. If you're looking for a place to unwind and recharge, Northstar is the perfect destination. While you'll still have access to numerous indoor and outdoor activities as well as some of the best restaurants found in Lake Tahoe, Northstar is a place that can be enjoyed at a more leisurely pace.

Spring skiing at Northstar is a hidden vacation gem that has yet to gain much attention. Sunny skies, mild temperatures and short lift lines are often the rewards for visitors during this time. It almost feels as if you have this quintessential European-inspired mountain village all to yourself.

Sugar Bowl

For a spring skiing adventure, look no further than Sugar Bowl Resort. With four mountains and more than 100 trails, this resort is a skier's and snowboarder's paradise.

Sugar Bowl Resort offers a throwback to the early days of skiing while also keeping up with modern amenities such as high-speed lifts and excellent grooming. They offer a Spring Pass for $399 that offers unlimited skiing and riding from March 1 until the season ends on April 23rd. If you're only planning to visit for a day or two, you can still enjoy their slopes with the Spring Fling $89 lift ticket when you bring a valid season pass from any Tahoe resort.

For those looking ahead to next season, you can ski free this spring when you purchase a 2023/24 Season Pass and show your current pass from another Tahoe resort. Some restrictions apply, so make sure to choose an unrestricted or slightly restricted purchase option.

Boreal

Boreal Mountain Resort is the ultimate destination for park enthusiasts with nine distinct terrain parks, including Woodward Tahoe and Peace Park Tahoe, catering to those looking to hone their freestyle skills. Yet, this eco-friendly resort is also family-friendly and suitable for new riders. For those who prefer smaller resorts or a more relaxed skiing experience, Boreal is an excellent choice.

Boreal offers a vibrant atmosphere and unbeatable prices, especially on $15 Fridays for day skiers. You can access dozens of freestyle runs right off Interstate 80. Boreal is also committed to sustainability as part of Truckee's Climate Action Plan, making significant investments in energy efficiency, green building, alternative fuels and waste reduction. Don't miss out on the fun as Boreal will be open until April 23.

Backcountry Skiing

If you're an experienced backcountry skier or splitboarder looking for a thrilling adventure, the Lake Tahoe area has some iconic spring tours that offer stunning views of the surrounding mountains. These tours include Mt. Rose, Jake's Peak, Castle Peak, Tinkers Knob and Donner Peak.

However, it's important to remember that backcountry skiing and splitboarding come with inherent risks, and proper preparation is crucial. It's essential to have the appropriate equipment, knowledge and experience before venturing into the backcountry. This includes carrying essential safety gear, such as a beacon, shovel and probe, and knowing how to use them effectively in case of an emergency.

In addition, it's recommended to take an avalanche safety course before heading out on a backcountry tour. This course can teach you how to read the snowpack, assess avalanche terrain and use appropriate travel techniques to minimize the risk of triggering an avalanche. Traveling with a knowledgeable partner or guide can also add an extra layer of safety and peace of mind.

After enjoying Lake Tahoe's outdoor springtime activities, be sure to enjoy one of the amazing events happening day and night. Learn more at either our Daytime or Nightlife sections.
