Did you know Lake Tahoe is home to 16 different species of bats?🦇 It’s true! While you might not spot the endangered 5-foot giant flying fox overhead unless you're in the Philippines, our local Tahoe microbats are absolute ecological superheroes right here in our own backyard. They're amazing pest control, consuming between 500 to 1,200 mosquito-sized insects per hour (that's 8,000 a night)! As a local partner to our beautiful California State Parks, we often get asked where to catch a glimpse of these fascinating creatures. Because bats head straight for a drink as soon as they wake up, the best strategy is to find an area with open sky right over the water shortly after sunset, like the lakeshore or Donner Lake.
