Tahoe Weekly celebrates our 40th anniversary! Feb. 18 marked Tahoe Weekly’s 40th anniversary. Tahoe Weekly's first edition in 1982 featured a photograph by Vance Fox of a skier cliff jumping near the horse trails in Olympic Valley. The cover for this 40th anniversary edition out on stands until March 8 is a nod to that first cover featuring Chuck Patterson in the Tahoe back country photographed by Matt Bansak. The magazine is still locally owned and operated.

Incline Education Fund is thrilled to announce that the recent Incline Elementary School (IES) Makerspace Drive is a success. With the generous assistance of local businesses including Tahoe Lending-Cardinal Financial, State Farm Insurance Agent Britney Bladel and Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe Resort, Spa & Casino along with local service/advocacy groups Rotary Tahoe-Incline, Rotary Club of Incline Village and AAUW Tahoe-Nevada and also joined by the Incline Elementary School PTA and additional charitable donor support, Incline Elementary students will now have a fully equipped makerspace.

Thanks to the outpouring of local philanthropy during the makerspace drive, the Incline Education Fund was also able to successfully apply for the recent Nevada Office of Science and Technology (OSIT) Northwestern Nevada Regional STEM grant. Community support for the IES makerspace was a leading factor in acquiring the recently announced $17,873.00 award.

With initial seed funding from the Incline Education Fund, the IES makerspace opened this fall. With a semester of makerspace classes complete, Incline Elementary School Principal Dan Zimmerman noted that the school has already noticed a positive improvement in students across the board. "The students are showing a greater degree of individual problem solving capability and ability to work successfully within a group dynamic." After the documented learning loss due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this is excellent news indeed.

New tour offering! 2022 Tahoe City Snowfest Parade and Polar Bear SwimFebruary 26 10am - 4pm (ish): Limited seating (6 available as of 2/22/22). The day includes pre-parade party, riding in the parade in the Around Tahoe Tour, and deck reservations at Garwoods for the 33rd Annual Polar Bear Swim with Wet Woodies. Envision Tahoe - Community Survey Results - The Community Survey results are in and reflect the importance of diversifying the regional economy, the need for more local worker housing, and that outdoor beauty and recreation opportunities are the reason we’re all living in Lake Tahoe. 1,799 of you contributed your time to this important community survey, completed in English and Spanish, in January. A few highlights of the survey:
* 63% of the community feels that things in Lake Tahoe are on the wrong track (which, sadly is similar to the national polling sentiment completed in January.)
* 73% feels that the lack of stable housing options is the biggest threat to locals’ quality of life, followed by traffic congestion/lack of transportation (61%), wildfires/smoke (58%), and too many vacation rentals/second homes (54%)
* And, no surprise, 79% of you felt that the highest or very highest priority for a solution should be to expand and promote economical housing opportunities for the local workforce.

Fortunately, this is a critical need in our community and one that relates directly to economic and community development moving forward. We recognize that economic diversification and supporting our core industry of Tourism can’t happen without housing for local workers.

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. – Sierra Nevada University (SNU) opened its doors in 1969 with just 23 students enrolled. Over 50 years later, administration is preparing for the final steps before the complete acquisition of the school by University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) in July of 2022. ... “Our primary focus for the next three and half years is to teach out the SNU students that are still here,” said Dr. Heaton. “We do acknowledge that as time progresses, you get fewer and fewer students, so we do have a plan to bring students to this campus.”

While we will not be advancing to the next level, the learning that occurred this year is as great as we have seen.
With the adversity of the past two years, the coaches and I created a space where collaboration and intellect were celebrated, where hard work reflected growth, and where grit and teamwork were a source of pride. With enthusiasm, our students presented to scholars from around the country - educators, judges, law school professors, and historians challenged our students to craft and defend complex arguments about challenges in our republic, and our students shined!
This environment for growth is not due to just one or two people (Amy Henderson and I) - it takes a village! The contribution from our coaches and community to that learning environment is something for which I am grateful.

The Orchestra and Chorus will perform Bach's Magnificat. This is followed by Elizabeth Pitcairn, performing on the 'Red Mendelssohn Stradivarius' violin, performing Wieniawski's famous Violin Concerto #2 with the Orchestra.

General admission is $30 for adults and $25 for seniors. Young persons, under age 23, enjoy FREE admission. "Front and Center" preferred seating prices are $40 for adults and $15 for youth/students.

Full moon week grooming schedule at Mt Rose Meadows: with the full moon this Wednesday, we will skip our normal Wednesday evening groom which will allow skiers to enjoy the trails Wednesday night without affecting the conditions on Thursday. Instead, we will groom Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings. Please avoid skiing on the freshly groomed corduroy those nights.

If you haven't tried Nevada Nordic's groomed trails at Mt Rose Meadows or Spooner Lake State Park because you don't have the nordic skis or snowshoes, visit our friends at Tahoe MultiSport where they will set you up with rentals and some instruction.

Pine Nuts: A Fish with a Bicycle -- We have long known that fish can navigate. Who among us has not visited Taylor Creek and stood in awe while witnessing the amazing annual salmon run? But can a fish navigate on land, drive a car? Come to find out, the answer is a resounding, “Yes!”

Let us update that popular slogan of the 70’s, “A woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle.” Israeli researchers have not yet taught a fish to navigate a bike, but they have succeeded in teaching a fish to drive a car, and navigate that car toward a cache of food, I kid you not.

These trained Israeli fish cannot drive a Tesla as yet, but they are really good at driving a robotic car designed just for them. There are six of these “fish on wheels” the first six that we know of, and get this, they are each named after characters in Jane Austen’s book, Pride and Prejudice, Mr. Darcy and Mr. Bingley outperforming the rest.

The We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution Program promotes civic competence and responsibility among the nation’s upper elementary and secondary students. The We the People print textbooks' and enhanced ebooks' interactive strategies, relevant content, and the simulated congressional hearing make teaching and learning exciting for both students and teachers. The We the People curriculum is an innovative course of instruction on the history and principles of the United States constitutional democratic republic. The program enjoys active support from state bar associations and foundations, and other educational, professional, business, and community organizations across the nation. Since its inception in 1987, more than 30 million students and 75,000 educators have participated in the We the People program.
