CONNECTED TAHOE: The Tahoe Prosperity has been working hard to connect with local jurisdictions, internet service providers, and other agencies to better collaborate across the region. There have been three Tahoe Regional Broadband Committee meetings thus far and continued mapping efforts by the Tahoe Prosperity Center. The TPC team is working to create a map specifically for partners that would facilitate collaboration, streamline funding applications, and consolidate available information regarding build-outs.
HOUSING TAHOE: One of the primary objectives of the Tahoe Prosperity Center is promoting intelligent, impactful policy changes in our communities that allow for equitable housing while still protecting our environment. As a participating member of the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency’s Living Communities work group, we think important progress is being made. The TRPA recently completed a deep dive into their construction policies including density, coverage, height and others, and we applaud TRPA’s commitment to these important policy reviews.

SPRING IS HERE – IT’S TIME TO THINK ABOUT YOUR DEFENSIBLE SPACE!
As we make our way into spring, it is a good time to start thinking about getting our yard cleaned up and that means making sure we have adequate defensible space. Effectively managing the vegetation around your home is something we can all do to help reduce the threat of wildfire, not just for your property but for your neighbor’s property as well.
Let’s Get Started
• Within the first 5 feet of the house – routinely remove all dead vegetation, including shrubs, fallen branches, grass, weeds and flowers, as well as dead or dying standing trees or recently fallen trees.
• From 5 to 30 feet of the house, remove every spring. Needles and leaves that fall after the removal period can accumulate on the ground if they do not create a fire hazard. More than 30 feet from the house, do not allow fallen needles and leaves to exceed a depth of 3 inches.
• Thin dense shrub stands to create more space between them. Depending on the slope of your terrain, shrubs or small clumps of shrubs should be separated from one another by at least twice the height of the average shrub. More distance is needed on steeper slopes.
• Ladder fuels are vegetation that can help the fire climb up from low-growing plants to adjacent taller shrubs and trees. Remove shrubs and trees growing under the drip line of trees and remove low-hanging branches not to exceed the bottom 1/3 of the tree’s height.

• Clearing debris and vegetation from the first 5 feet away from your house can make a significant impact and get you started.
• Move your wood pile at least 30’ from your home.
• Remove pine needles from the roof and roof gutters, and under deck areas.
• Consider fire-resistant landscaping.
Maintaining a defensible space is an ongoing activity. Each Spring, re-evaluate your defensible space and implement the necessary recommendations. Also consider your home vulnerability and review the Wildfire Home Retrofit Guide for recommendations on how to retrofit exiting components of a home to withstand wildfire.
Take advantage of our FREE Curbside Chipping service available starting May 9, 2022. Please note the following guidelines when requesting this service:
• Piles must be curbside and easily accessible.
• The branch diameter cannot exceed 6 inches.
• Pile must not contain stumps, roots, garbage, nails, lumber, or pine cones.
• Pile must not exceed 30 feet in length, 6 feet in height, and 6 feet in width.
Chips will be left on-site and can be spread around the property for landscaping or erosion control, but not within 5 feet of a structure. If you choose to spread the chips within 30 feet of a structure, ensure that mulch beds are separated by noncombustible areas, such as dirt, rock, or pathways. Also, ensure that mulched areas do not contain highly flammable vegetation.

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — Local leaders of nonprofits, agencies, educators, churches, and services clubs joined together on Wednesday, April 13, to discuss the complex issues that are facing the North Shore of Lake Tahoe.

The Washoe Tahoe Community Collaborative Summit, hosted by Incline Village Crystal Bay Community and Business Association Executive Director Linda Offerdahl, brought together leaders at the Parasol Tahoe Community Foundation building in Incline Village.

Those in attendance included representatives from Washoe County, the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, Sierra Community House, educators including Incline High School Principal Tierney Cahill, staff from Pet Network, IVGID representatives, and more.

Leaders from all over the North Shore were able to gather in Incline Village to identify key issues in the communities through open and clear communication.
“It was really gratifying today to see our leadership come together with our local IVGID government, our nonprofits, our service providers like Sierra Community House, Boys and Girls Club, Tahoe Family Solutions, along with our faith based community,” said Offerdahl following the three hour summit. “Those big issues [facing the community], there is no longer a ‘they.’ Now it is a collective ‘us’ that will try to address these greater issues.”

Multiple groups were tabled together to address the core branches of the community, which included education and childcare, housing and food, family services, health and wellness, safety, adult and senior services.

Reason suggests that if nature exhibits symmetry and design, nature must have a designer, so mankind has been kept pretty busy over the ages crediting that design to various deities and creators. Were I superintending, I would give full credit to the rightful designer, the original creator, our dear mother herself, in all her glory, Mother Nature.

Well, help is on the way. In a paper published recently in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers are discovering that nature produces symmetry because it’s easier to follow the building blocks of symmetrical genetic code than it is to produce and follow asymmetry.

On April 21, 2022 Dr. Chan Hellman will be at the Lake Tahoe School to present a FREE community event on 'The Science of Hope'.

Dr. Hellman will speak about the application of hope theory to those impacted by trauma and adversity. Additionally, Hellman will discuss the impact of prevention and intervention services on increasing and sustaining client hope.

While he is here, the Incline Education Fund will be sponsoring Dr. Hellman on Wednesday, April 20 to speak to Incline High School students, Incline Middle and High School staff as well as spending time with Incline Schools counselors and Incline Elementary School teachers.

Chan M. Hellman, PhD. is a professor of social work at the University of Oklahoma and Director of The Hope Research Center. He has written more than 150 scientific publications and has presented at numerous national and international conferences worldwide. Dr. Hellman also presented his work on hope with TEDx in May of 2021.

Dr. Hellman’s research is focused on hope as a psychological strength helping children and adults overcome trauma and adversity. This research informed the development of the “Hope Centered and Trauma Informed®” training program. He is the co-author of the award-winning book “Hope Rising: How the Science of Hope Can Change Your Life” with his co-author Casey Gwinn, published by Morgan James.

Whether you're just walking to school or the store, or heading out for an hour long cleanup at your favorite Tahoe spot, make sure to leave it better than you found it by picking up any litter that you see along the way.
