Tahoe Symphony Orchestra helps you celebrate the Fourth of July with family and friends, close to home! Our 17th annual “BOPS” concert, conducted by Maestro James Rawie, is a delightful summer event that we perform in two venues at the Lake, in Truckee, Reno, and in the Carson Valley. Revel in full orchestra and chorus performances of patriotic favorites, be swept off your feet by great opera arias, join in a sing-along, and, if you’re the highest bidder, you’ll conduct the orchestra in “The Stars and Stripes Forever”!

It's my hope that we will share with you on a monthly basis, tips and tools to help help teenagers (and their parents) and young adults navigate the many complex emotional, social, and career/financial challenges they face in life.

This month we're focusing on Emotional Freedom, the role of Dharma (our purpose in life) and the role of social and emotional education in our human development.

Summer Fire Restrictions in Effect June 1, 2022

Summer fire restrictions will be in effect June 1, 2022, for the North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District serving the communities of Incline Village and Crystal Bay, Nevada, until further notice. Current fire restrictions prohibit the use of solid fuel, which includes charcoal and wood. This also applies to the IVGID parks and beach charcoal grilling areas.

Please note that federal and state lands campfire restrictions may differ. Check the local fire restrictions pertinent to your location.

“As we enter another year of drought conditions, we want to remind folks to recreate responsibly while outdoors during the summer months and do your part to create and maintain your defensible space,” said Fire Marshal Jennifer Donohue.

This is also a reminder during Red Flag Warnings, all sources of outdoor open flame, including gas fire pits/grills and pellet grills/smokers are prohibited.

The National Weather Service (NWS) Reno issues Red Flag Warnings to alert land management officials and fire agencies when the potential of critical weather that could lead to wildfire activity. With our drought conditions and dry vegetation, we urge our citizens to check the weather before participating in outdoor activities.

PINE NUTS: A Most Charming Bird
There’s more to a Steller’s Jay than we know. My pet Jay, Huckleberry, has demonstrated over the past two days, two distinct emotions I didn’t know he, or any bird had.

First a little background, Huck was born in the summer of 2017 on my lower deck. I could see from the top deck that he was getting ready to fledge, so I spread a sleeping bag on the driveway below to soften his landing. He hit it squarely and looked up to me as if to say thanks, while his sisters took it on the chin. We’ve been pals ever since.

Historic fight: Tahoe Keys battles invasive weeds with herbicides.
SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — History was made this week as scientists and agency leaders gathered in the Tahoe Keys at Lake Tahoe to watch the application of herbicides as part of a massive effort to knock back aquatic invasive species.

Herbicides were applied to three sites within the Tahoe Keys on Wednesday, May 25, and will be applied to 10 other sites over the next week. The herbicides, Endothall and Triclopyr, were applied to the restricted boating Area B which encompasses the waterways that are accessed from Venice, Morro and Monterey Drives.

Mark Twain once penned a book, Letters from the Earth, in which an archangel makes sarcastic remarks about the Creator and gets banished into space, where he flaps around until it occurs to him to push on and hunt up the Earth to see how the Human-Race experiment is coming along. He writes home, very privately, to St. Michael about his findings. And just here, I might like to invoke poetic license, and insert a personal letter to St. Michael, as I revisit Earth in this Year of Our Lord, 2022…
