Three miles south of the town of Incline Village on Highway 28, Sand Harbor has a variety of natural features that you can spend an entire day exploring. You can hike several trails down the shoreline or off into the woods. You can rock-hop, scrambling across the giant boulders that extend out into the lake. You can rent a kayak or standup paddleboard to float down to the Thunderbird Lodge. You can don a mask and snorkel to explore what lies beneath the lake’s surface. Or you may just want to find a sunny spot on the fine-grained sand to lie back and explore the inside of your eyelids.
Sand Harbor has a double ramp boat launch, open when the lake level is high enough. Refreshments are available, with outdoor seating on a large, shady deck. Picnic areas are set back from the beach in shady forested areas and come equipped with barbecues and picnic tables. Sand Harbor also has a secluded group picnic area with its own parking, separate beach area with a fire pit and barbecue. It can accommodate groups of up to 100 people and is a popular spot for family picnics and picturesque weddings. There's an outdoor theater here, where the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival is held in the summer. The visitor center and gift shop has regional information and displays of Tahoe’s natural and cultural history. There is a fee for parking, and the lot fills up fast in the summer, so try to arrive early to get a spot. Pets are not allowed.
Day-use reservations are needed from April 15 to October 15. Spots are available 50, 100 and 200 days in advance as well as the same day. After 10:30 a.m., unclaimed spots are first-come, first-served. Click here for more information.
