Thank you Incline Village and surrounding communities for your generous support for the fire victims & fire fighters. On 9/11 The Village Christian Thrift Shop raised $3,000 in sales and donations that we matched. A total of $6,000 will go to Caldor Fire Fund, Wildland Firefighters Foundation, and Salvation Army Del Oro - CA/NV Fire Relief.

Incline Village REALTORS, Good Neighbors of Incline Village Committee would like to say thank you to the Incline Village and Crystal Bay communities! Not even fires and ash could stop this community from giving to our local schools. With your help, we raised over $11,000 in cash donations and school supplies. We were able to give each teacher from Incline Village Elementary, Middle, and High Schools gift cards. We had gift cards from Rainbow Printing, Walmart, Target, Office Depot, and many other places. Thanking Our Firefighters

When the lake we love for it’s scenic splendor showed up in a photo on the front page of the New York Times with the caption, “ The lake that Mark Twain once called ‘the fairest picture the whole Earth affords,’ looks and smells like the bottom of an ashtray.” Well, that was enough to sink my heart to the very bottom of Lake Tahoe.
So I donned a mask and walked down to the lake. I don’t tear-up easily, but “the fairest picture the whole Earth affords” was not looking so fair. A lady shouted to me along the way, “You are so brave to be out here walking.”
I responded, “Thanks be to our intrepid firefighters we have the smoke, and not the flames.” Then I evacuated on an unplanned road trip to visit friends in the Bay Area who were
not expecting me…

My Evacuation List looked something like this…

One nice thing about lifelong friends is that they are always quick to feign they are as happy to see you as they might be to see a winning three-way parlay ticket placed at the Hyatt Sports Book a year or two ago. And too, it’s always entertaining to hear one of them whisper through the kitchen window, “Hide the good silver!”
And then our fearless firefighters did it! Twenty nine hundred of Tahoe’s finest saved the Masterpiece of the Creator, the Lake of the Sky, Lake Tahoe. I thanked my generous hosts for their safe harbor and drove four hours home to the lake, still there, encased in hazardous haze, but still there. I was so elated to be returning home that I realized as I pulled into my drive that I had made the entire trip with my left turn indicator on.
Once again home to Layne Haven, I opened a bottle of Mark Twain’s Private Stock and hoisted a glass on high to our gallant firefighters, hung a few Twain portraits back up on the wall, and called St. Pat’s for a possible venue in which to present a benefit for our firefighters, the victims of the Caldor Fire, and the animal rescue heroes who answered the call. Outside of a grateful look from a grounded hoot owl, those animal rescue folks hardly get any thanks.
I’m happy to report our benefit will be at St. Pat’s beautiful new outdoor amphitheater on the evening of Saturday, September 25th, 6pm-7:30, “The Air That Angels Breathe – An Evening with Mark Twain at Tahoe and the Hawaiian Islands.”
Let’s get out and shout our gratitude…a $25 donation is suggested, more if you can stand it, checks payable to St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church. For reservations call 775-833-1835.

SEPTEMBER IS NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTH: Prepare to protect.

Preparing for disasters is protecting everyone you love. National Preparedness Month is recognized each September to promote family and community disaster planning now and throughout the year. Being prepared for an emergency includes three basic steps:

1. Make a Plan - talk to your friends and family about how you will communicate before, during, and after a disaster. Make sure to update your plan based on the Centers for Disease Control recommendations due to the Coronavirus.
2. Assemble a Kit - gather supplies that will last for several days after a disaster for everyone living in your home. Don’t forget to consider the unique needs each person or pet may have in case you have to evacuate quickly. Update your kits and supplies based on recommendations by the Centers for Disease Control.
3. Stay Informed - Natural disasters don’t wait for a convenient time. Preparing for them shouldn’t wait either. Start today by signing up for alerts, safe-guarding important documents, and taking other low cost and no cost preparedness actions to lessen the impact of disasters and emergencies for you and your family.

If you have these three components in place you will be able to navigate an emergency situation much quicker with less stress.

COVID-19 left many people who work in restaurants and bars of Tahoe vulnerable, and the Caldor Fire has magnified their challenges significantly. Tahoe’s food and beverage industry workforce needs your help to make it through these disasters! Food and beverage industry workers of South Lake Tahoe and surrounding areas are among those currently unable to work due to threat of the Caldor Fire and the mandatory evacuations that occurred during the week of August 30th. We anticipate a slow transition back to normalcy once our community is able to return home and businesses are able to re-open.

Due to the Caldor Fire, Air Quality, and in respect to our neighbors in South Shore and beyond... it is with a heavy heart that we have decided to POSTPONE our Music on the Beach, Lights in the Sky event, which was scheduled for this Friday September 10, to a later date. This event was created with our amazing community in mind, but we also want to expand this event to include the entire Tahoe Basin, and to celebrate and acknowledge the resiliency that all our communities have shown not only from Covid, but also from the recent challenges related to the Caldor Fire. More so, we want to celebrate and thank our heroic firefighters and first responders who are protecting our communities and saving lives, structures, wildlife, and forests.

Wildfires are unfortunately displacing much of the wildlife in our area. Most times, displacing them into more populated areas. Until the animals can safely return to the wilderness, keep your home and pets safe with the STI Rex barking dog alarm. The STI Rex Barking Dog Alarm detects movement in a selected indoor location.

I would not like to be the lowest paid player in any professional sport. I’m much too conceited. I once crowed like a dunghill rooster for a week after entering a Marine Corps R&R tournament in Vietnam and beating a Red Cross nurse in ping pong. So I have to wonder how Tyrone Swoopes felt when he became the lowest paid player in the 2019/20 National Football League. My heart went out to him and I only wished I could give him a hug and shed some tears down his back.
