PINE NUTS: A Cube of Ice. As Mark Twain tells us, “It’s the little things that smoothes people’s roads out the most.” And so it happened back in 1966 on a hellish afternoon in a Vietnam village, that a Montagnard woman handed a Marine a cube of ice. There was no electricity in that village, nor was there enough money to purchase a generator, so how could this guardian angel have manufactured a cube of ice?

March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, and Tahoe Forest Health System is raising awareness in the community on the importance of getting screened for colorectal cancer.
Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among men and women in the United States- but it doesn’t have to be. Through screening, colorectal cancer is preventable and treatable, if caught early.
A colonoscopy is one of several screening tests for colorectal cancer. During a colonoscopy, precancerous growths can be removed before they even turn to cancer.
Talk with your primary care provider about when to begin screening for colorectal cancer and which test is right for you.

On Tuesday, the Tahoe Transportation District implemented fees to park near Lake Tahoe’s East Shore Trail in Incline Village. Always part of the Highway 28 Corridor Management Plan, the fee structure rewards early birds and night owls, costing anyone who parks 7-9 a.m. $1 an hour or free 7-11 p.m. From 9-11 it goes up to $3 an hour weekdays and $4 Friday through Sunday and then to $4 3-5 p.m. weekdays and $4 Friday through Sunday.

Spring fees are in effect until Memorial Day Weekend when summer rates begin. The district is the lead agency for the East Shore Trail Project, along with the Nevada Department of Transportation and a dozen other agencies.

PINE NUTS: Army Ants and Us ~ Army Ants know all about aggression. They think they invented aggression, and they will do it all day long for the queen. Sound familiar? Here’s how they wage their wars; first they bivouac, that is to say, they build a living nest with their bodies within a tree trunk or hole in the ground. Don’t ask me how they do that. Once they are organized into a big ball, the soldier ants, those with the big mandibles, patrol the surface of the bivouac and fight off aggressors.

PINE NUTS: She Cleaned City Hall Until She Became Mayor
In Russia’s managed democracy of this 21st century, sometimes, though not often, an underdog candidate will actually win an election. It’s rare as hens’ teeth, but it happened a couple years ago in the tiny village of Povalikhino. The incombent mayor was in desperate need of an opponent to fill out his official looking ballot, but everybody knew the odds, and nobody would step-up. So the mayor asked city hall janitor, Marina Udgodskaya, if she might be willing to place her good name on the ballot as his opponent. Marina must have rolled her eyes and thought, “Oh well, what the hell!” Because she acceded, and amazingly, she won.

Marina suddenly found herself to be the honorable mayor of Povalikhino, and of course her first order of business was to hire a reliable replacement to clean city hall, then the good mayor took to procuring streetlights for the village. Such an anomaly can happen in a small Russian village, but in cities or national elections…Nyet.
