Dust off those cross-country skis and snowshoes, groomed trails will return to Sugar Pine Point State Park and Donner Memorial State Park this winter. This past year, thanks to the Parks California's Route to Parks grant program, we were able to purchase the Polaris grooming machine (top left in the pictures above) for Sugar Pine. And thanks to supporters like you, we purchased a grooming attachment, the Snow Master-48, for Donner (bottom left). SSPF donated this equipment to California State Parks, who maintain the trails in the parks. As cross-country skiing and snowshoeing continue to grow in popularity, having high quality groomed trails will enhance the experience of our visitors as they create lasting memories. These groomed trails will provide visitors with an even more enjoyable and memorable outdoor adventure!

We have some exciting news to share, DL Bliss State Park will be reopening in 2026! This is long-awaited and much anticipated news, and we've been eagerly awaiting this reopening as much as everyone in our community. Mark your calendars for May 21, 2026, and get ready to enjoy one of Tahoe's treasures yet again. We're already looking forward to greeting park visitors at the Visitor Center next year!

The aurora borealis, or northern lights, is a natural light display in the sky caused by the collision of charged particles from the sun with gases in Earth's atmosphere, which are then guided by the planet's magnetic field toward the poles. This interaction creates a colorful, shimmering show of light, with different colors resulting from the types of gases and altitudes at which the collisions occur. Neat!

Happy National Cat Day from our ever-elusive mountain lion (Felis concolor)! While there aren't any elk in Tahoe, our mountain lions' diet includes smaller prey such as rabbits, porcupines, and even coyotes, but primarily consists of deer. Tahoe’s deer migrate to lower elevations in the winter, and the lions track these migrations following them. When the deer return upslope in spring, the lions return as well. Unlike the deer, however, they prefer to keep their distance from humans and neighborhoods. With so much open space surrounding Tahoe’s developed areas, they still have a relatively easy time avoiding people—and biologists!

Dress your pet in their best Halloween costume and submit a photo of them on our website, or bring them in-store for a chance to win a frightfully fun grand prize! Two ways to submit your pet's costume entry:

2) Bring your pet in store- either our Donner Pass, Soaring Ranch or Incline Village locations. Ask for a manager so they can grab a photo!
