Boating & Swimming Safety in Lake Tahoe - Summer has arrived and with that, it is a good time to review summer water safety tips – specific to Lake Tahoe. We all know the temperature of Lake Tahoe is a bit colder than most since it is an Alpine Lake.

Whether boating, jet skiing, kayaking, rafting, paddle boarding or swimming, it’s a good idea to inform yourself about the colder temperatures of Lake Tahoe and how it can affect you, visit www.waterdata.usfs.gov. It’s also a good idea to check the wind conditions and red flag warning status. You can find this information at www.weather.gov.

Currently the water temperature is approximately 55 degrees. As the winter run off continues to melt and makes its way to the lake, the water temperatures will fluctuate August through September. Lake Tahoe is the second deepest lake in the United States, because of this the temperatures remain lower year-round than most lakes in our region.

We respond to numerous water emergencies on the lake not just during the summer months but throughout the year. Please consider the following safety precautions before recreating on Lake Tahoe:

BOAT SAFE: PREPARE FOR COLD WATER AT LAKE TAHOE
Wear a life jacket
Carry a whistle or horn
Dress for the water temperature, not the air temperature
Check the weather forecast for wind conditions
Never go on the water alone
Don’t drink alcohol while recreating on the lake
File a float plan – leave it with a friend or family member

Wear a life jacket and know your swimming limitations
Enter the water slowly
Feet first, first time
Swim with a buddy
Respect the dangers of cold water

PINE NUTS : How to Take Out Your Own Stitches or Not
To begin, I sometimes speak-up when a little voice deep down inside is shouting, “Don’t do it!” That happened at the VA last month when they were telling me when to return to have my stitches out. I told them I had a semester of pre-med and could take out my own stitches. I heard a janitor in the back of the room laugh, but a capable nurse handed me a bundle of tools, placed her caring hand on my shoulder, and sent me home.

Well, I went right to work making preparations. I bought a new pair of eyeglasses, arranged for the very best lighting, found a magnifying glass that might be helpful, and laid out the tools of my new trade.

Now, they did not teach me, in my one semester of pre-med, how to remove sutures, but that omission did not deter me from volunteering to tackle the procedure myself. I mean, how hard could it be? It must be exactly like untying your shoes. In fact, I practiced untying my shoes with my surgical tools. But I shall pause just here, as I will embark upon my maiden voyage tomorrow, and shall have actual experience to draw upon…

Day One: Dang, these knots are sooo dang small! And you have to get under them to cut them loose. Once upon a time I had good enough hand-eye coordination to milk a cow, even if she did look around at me, as if to ask, “What are you doing back there?” But removing my own stitches might be too many for me.

What I might need is a plan B…I have a daughter-in-law who is a gifted nurse, but she is in Italy. I can’t go back to the VA, because I can’t face that janitor who laughed out loud when I said I could take out my own stitches. So what happens if I leave the stitches in? Will they eventually dissolve, or do I get to look like I have a zipper on my forehead the rest of my natural life?

Maybe my college counselor was right when she advised me to change my major from pre-med to auctioneer or carny-barker. Well, I’m not giving up quite yet. I have successfully removed five stitches and have fifteen to go. Let’s see what tomorrow holds, because right now I need a straight shot of Old Sam Spiced Gin - Hand Crafted in Goldfield, Nevada for just such an occasion…

Day Two: I wish my mother were still alive. I did successfully remove ten stitches. The remaining ten look like a parade of ants out for a nature hike on a picnic table, but my mother would still love me. Well, so much for my venture in medicine. I shall close here with renewed respect and appreciation for the capable doctors and nurses at our amazing VA…thank you!

Pine Nuts: Amending the Second Amendment ~ Better minds than mine have examined this issue, yet sometimes it proves helpful for a regular Mae, or in this case a regular Mac, to look with fresh eyes at a thorny issue and report her or his findings. So let us take a look at the Second Amendment…

The first clause is the precondition, "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State," this establishes the reason and purpose for the second clause, "the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." In 1791 we did not have a well regulated militia, but we do now. We spend more than a billion dollars a day to regulate a National Guard, Air Force, Army, Navy, Marine Corps and CIA. The emergence of a well regulated militia effectively nullifies the need and purpose of the people to keep and bear arms.

I humbly submit here, a 28th Amendment to bring the 2nd Amendment into the 21st century. So what should such a 28th Amendment say? To my mind it is very straightforward…

“Henceforth, the right of the people to keep and bear single-shot arms shall not be infringed."

In closing, assault weapons should never be available for purchase, and present owners of assault weapons should be given an opportunity to sell-back their assault weapon, or expect a friendly greeting in the mail, “Welcome to Fort Bragg.”

The foremost responsibility of our Congress is to keep us safe, so let us amend the Second Amendment and protect our kids from domestic terrorism.

Washoe County Tahoe Transportation Plan Survey *** SURVEY DEADLINE EXTENDED UNTIL JULY 15 - PLEASE PARTICIPATE!!! *** Washoe County is asking residents and visitors to participate in an online survey for the Washoe County Tahoe Transportation Plan. Using an interactive map and answering a few short questions, participants have the opportunity to provide input about their transportation concerns and priorities for the Incline Village/Crystal Bay areas.

“Incline Village and Crystal Bay are the communities that tie Washoe County to Lake Tahoe, a treasure in our backyard,” Commissioner Alexis Hill said. “I want to learn from the community about how we can improve public safety, traffic, parking, and aesthetics on the north shore to make the experience of visiting and living in Tahoe better for all.”

Input received through the website will be used to identify needs, priorities, and goals for the Incline Village/Crystal Bay areas.

The study is focused on identifying safety and mobility solutions for the Incline Village and Crystal Bay areas. It is focusing on:

*Envisioning the future of State Route 28
*Supporting transit improvements
*Exploring parking solutions
*Refining the snow plowing strategy for multiuse trails
*Expanding the use of trip reduction programs

The online survey and interactive map will be available for public comment through July 15. An in-person public meeting is being planned for this fall and the plan is expected to be completed by the end of 2022.

Pine Nuts: Make the Music and Dance
The first noticeably happy people to attract my undivided attention were San Diego roller-bladers, skating down the boardwalk with music in their ears. This was forty years ago or so, and these dancing athletes were clearly happy to the core. It made me smile and even laugh in the wake of their sheer joy.

Music makes everything better. I take Milt Jackson with me into the laundry room and his vibes turn that laundry room into Milt Jackson’s Avalon Ballroom, it’s magic really.

The happiest people in the world today, to one who has slipped on the ice and lived to tell about it, must be figure skaters. The ladies dress like they’re going to a cocktail party at the Royal Hawaiian, attired in three well-placed cocktail napkins. But then they put on their best poker faces and take to the ice like Joan of Arc took it to the Burgundians. I always watch the women’s competition with a frozen daiquiri in-hand, sometimes both hands. That way, when an ill-fated skater slips on the ice, and goes down like Raggedy-Ann, I can take a sip, open my third eye, and feel her pain.

The music leaves a little to be desired. I might like to throw in some Van Morrison, and really crank it up with, G-L-O-R-I-A! Also, a little LOUIE-LOUIE might help to liven things up a little bit.

I remember watching the Lady’s Olympic Figure Skating Competition on television where I worked, and arriving home to find my wife watching the same program, but an hour behind what I had just seen. Well, she already believed I was a genius in one thing and one thing only, women’s figure skating, and this was my chance to cement that belief.

I waited for just the right moment, and said, “Honey, watch this! She looks a little wobbly, I bet she’s going to fall on her…”

“Oh my gosh! Darling, you’re right! You really do know your figure skating! You should be announcing these Olympics.”

To this day, if she is going to say anything complimentary about her ex-husband, me, it might be, “He has his flaws, yes, but I’ll tell you what…he knows his figure skating! He can take one look at a skater and tell you where she will place in the standings. He will point his index-finger at the television set, go thumbs down, and that girl will trip, slip, and land on her keester, I’m not kidding.”

Well, it never hurts to have somebody think you are a genius when you are really just a lucky guy who happened to have been privy to a sneak preview. Do I feel a little taste of remorse? Yes. Will I ever tell her? Never. Come watch the next Winter Olympics with me. I’ll provide the popcorn, and heck, I might even provide the commentary…
