16th Annual Passport to Dining set for November 10 ~ North Tahoe's Most Flavorful Fundraiser Features 30 Food, Wine, and Beer Tasting Stations and a Silent Auction and Raffle
Back for it's sixteenth year, Passport to Dining promises to be an evening of delicious food, craft breweries, and regional wineries that attendees won't want to miss. North Tahoe Business Association (NTBA), a nonprofit organization with a mission to improve economic vitality and quality of life, will host North Tahoe's most flavorful fundraiser on Thursday, November 10, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at North Tahoe Event Center, in Kings Beach, CA.

Passport to Dining brings together 30 tasting stations offering a wide variety of flavors from restaurants, caterers, wineries, and breweries. While enjoying tastings, attendees can support two worthy local nonprofit organizations by purchasing raffle tickets and bidding on silent auction items and packages. The raffle and auction are recognized as one of the best in North Lake Tahoe featuring Northern California Getaway Packages and many additional valuable items.

This year, NTBA will donate a portion of Passport to Dining’s proceeds to Sierra Community House, an organization dedicated to connecting and empowering the community through family strengthening, crisis intervention, hunger relief, and legal services.

Tickets are $60 and include unlimited responsible tastings. Attendees can vote for the People's Choice award for best food station. Tickets are available in advance only, and can be found online at www.northtahoebusiness.org on a limited, first-come, first-served basis.

"Passport to Dining is a super fun and social fundraiser that allows NTBA to showcase and guests to enjoy culinary delights from a variety of tasting stations while supporting two worthy local nonprofit organizations," said Alyssa Reilly, executive director of NTBA.

PINE NUTS:: Two Cans and a String
A good friend drove an hour to have lunch with me in my kitchen. I can’t speak for him, but I’ve been in a good mood since. There are some health-giving qualities about one-on-one conversations that elevate them to the realm of tonics. Think back to how fun it was to talk to a friend as a child with two cans and a string.
Somehow, as we matured, we found value in chatrooms, Zoom, and other social media conveniences that tend to sideline personal conversations between two people.
Can you even have a conversation with more than two people, or does three people constitute a conference? In my experience, I’ve found that a two-person conversation develops a rhythm of its own, resembling a folksong without the music. I ask you, when was the last time you held a meaningful conversation with one other person for longer than five minutes?
I would like to ask Mr. Putin when he last held a meaningful conversation with one other person for longer than five minutes. The photo of Putin sitting at that looong table comes to mind.
Some of the charm in Adventures of Huckleberry Finn can be found in the casual conversations Huck and Jim have while floating down the Mississippi together on a raft…

How much good literature do we owe to the conversations of two characters? How many of our own life changing decisions do we owe to such personal conversations?

PINE NUTS :: Why I Reside in the 19th Century ~ Why am I so in love with the 19th century? I get asked that a lot. And the answer is so simple. I’m in love with the 19th century because the 19th century was pretty much eye-to-eye, and there’s nothing like looking into a person’s eye to gauge the veracity of a person’s word.

In the 19th century a man’s word was his bond. A handshake was good as a written contract. We were not as litigious in the 19th century, and even when litigation did arise, it was always interesting and sometimes even entertaining. Take the celebrated Landslide Case, where an entire Sierra ranch slid down on top of another. Judge Isaac Roop handed a shovel to the rancher whose property was on the bottom, and declared, “Providential Dispensation…dig yourself out!”

Entertainment in the 19th century was mostly about storytelling. Some stories were frivolous, some were profound, but most were downright funny. There was a humorist who inspired Mark Twain, Artemus Ward, whom I would love to have met. He had a way with words, burlesquing words if you will, that would make a person on death row smile. In his, “High-Handed Outrage at Utica,” Ward took poetic license with the English language, and the law, to create, to my mind, a masterpiece…

Well, it was probably a good thing Mark Twain did not take to burlesquing the English language like Artemus Ward did, or we might not have the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor awarded annually at the Kennedy Center. Still, we need to credit Artemus Ward for tickling Mark Twain’s funny bone away back in the glorious 19th century, when everything was pretty much eye-to-eye.

"The U.S. Department of Education released data showing that from 2020 to 2022, average reading scores for 9-year-olds slid 5 points—to 215 out of a possible 500 in the sharpest decline since 1990. Average math scores fell 7 points to 234, the first statistically significant decline in math scores since the long-term trend assessments began in the 1970s." Wall Street Journal, September 7, 2022. Earlier, on August 8, the Washoe County School District (WCSD) shared via the Reno Gazette-Journal, “approximately 34% of WCSD students met or exceeded grade level standards in math.” While IES scores came in higher than the district at 39% (5% lower than pre-Covid numbers), there in still much work to be done.

We at the Incline Education Fund believe that with your help, the Incline Schools can reverse the learning loss of the past two years and increase reading and math scores across the board through our year-long literacy focus. Last spring, the Incline Education Fund piloted a First Grade Reading Intervention Program led by Retired National Board-Certified Teacher Kathleen McInnis-Martens to support reading success. McInnis-Martens worked with the Incline Elementary School (IES) teachers to target those students most in need of assistance. With only a partial year of tutoring, these students tested in the high growth category on the Measured Academic Progress (MAP) Report for Reading last Spring and many of those students 'words per minute' reading scores doubled. This targeted intervention reflects what Bianca Vasquez Torres found in the August 30, 2022 Associated Press article on education. After interviewing John King, Jr., former U.S. Secretary of Education and president of Education Trust, she wrote that studies show "...If done well, tutoring has a greater impact than most other interventions". (**Kathleen McInnis-Marten, an IVCBA member, is the owner of Glasses Wine Bar in Incline Village**)

The Incline Education Fund is building on McInnis-Marten's success last year and is now adding math intervention as well. We need your help to roll these programs up through the rest of the school grade by grade. This year, especially, it is imperative to support those students who've lost critical learning time. Vasquez-Torres added that studies show "Third graders are at a particularly delicate moment. This is the year when they must master reading or risk school failure. Everything after third grade will require reading comprehension to learn math, social studies and science. Students who don't read fluently by the end of third grade are more likely to struggle in the future, or even drop out."

Please help Incline students succeed across the board with targeted tutoring for those who need it most. With you, they can.

TAHOE TALKS at INCLINE VILLAGE LIBRARY ~ **Note this event is at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 11**
Don’t be confused by the similarity in name with UNR at Lake Tahoe’s speaker series! The Incline Village Library is relaunching its roundtable discussion programs. Tahoe Talks features a timely topic with guest experts. The goal of the program is to share first-hand information and experience with fellow community members in a non-charged setting.
Mark your calendars for Tuesday, October 11 6:30 p.m., for the program on Homelessness in the Tahoe Basin. Guest experts include District 1 Commissioner Alexis Hill and North Tahoe Truckee Homeless Service Program Director Cathie Foley.
On Tuesday, November 15, we’ll discuss States vs. Federal Rights.

A Tahoe sunset in the month of September… it’s been gloomy & smokey the past few days due to the #MosquitoFire. We are thankful for all the personnel and firefighters that are battling this beast.
