There will come a time when intermarriage of diverse races will produce a child that nobody can look at and dislike. That time is now, and that child has arrived. On the thirteenth of November of 2002 a baby girl was born in Toronto, Canada to a father from Bucharest, Romania, and a mother from Shenyang, China. Her parents moved her to London when she was two and placed a tennis racket in her hands when she turned five. However, already excelling in karting and motocross, her tennis would be on hold for another year. By seven she was good at tennis but not great. Her will to win was boosted somewhat by her parents promise of a new tennis outfit if she won, and win she did.

Reflections: As we transition from summer into fall, we are afforded the opportunity to reflect on our work and the impact it has on our community. Summer kept us busy serving a high volume of community members across our programing. We increased hours and staffing in our five offices to provide in-person services as safely as possibly. Since the start of COVID-19, we have provided over 540,000 meals and over $700,000 in rental and utility assistance, keeping our community sheltered and food secure. And while these numbers are impressive, they do not tell the whole story of what we do. They do not reflect the individuals who have been participating in programming like Parent Café, Zumba or various pop-up vaccine clinics. They do not reflect the fact that our Safe House has been full for months with individuals and families fleeing violence, and they do not reflect the hundreds of youth engaging with our Prevention Program around issues like healthy relationships, consent, mental health, and bullying prevention. The depth of our programming cannot be captured in a few sentences; the ways in which we interact and connect with the community are many.

As Sierra Community House enters year three of consolidation, our focus has been on serving the community, rarely coming up for air to see the life-changing impact of our services. We are grateful to our community partners for recognizing the core services provided by Sierra Community House. We were recently a finalist for the Truckee Resiliency Award from Truckee Chamber of Commerce, both for our organization as a whole and for our Promotora Team, providing culturally specific public and mental health education in our community. This recognition is inspiring as it demonstrates our community’s belief and support in our mission: to connect and empower our community through family strengthening, crisis intervention, hunger relief, and legal services.

I used to sometimes remind my son, “The best two things money can buy are the morning paper and flowers for your mother.” When Mac was in seventh grade I would ask him to read an article out of the morning paper before heading off to school, which he did without complaint, sometimes. One morning around 2001 he read an article about skiing in Iran, where if you were caught skiing with the opposite sex you could get thirty lashes and a fine of $100. Mac pondered that social constraint a moment, then expounded with the easy insouciance that only a seventh grader can command: “They need to get with it a little.”

TART Connect is a network of vans that can pick up riders and drop them off anywhere within the zone. There are three zones, Zone 1 is Tahoe City, Zone 2 is Kings Beach and Zone 3 is Incline Village and Crystal Bay..."

Thanks to the generosity of the community and our partners at the VC Women’s Ministry on Saturday 9/11 matched donations came to a total donation of $8,000 which was in turn donated to the El Dorado fire relief, Del Oro Salvation Army & Wildland Firefighters. We thank you in joining us to provide help to fire victims & injured firefighters.

The Tahoe Transportation District has found new funding sources for the purchase of the Old Elementary School lot in Incline Village. During their March 2021 meeting, the TTD board approved a purchase agreement with Washoe County School District for the property at 771 Southwood Boulevard, Incline Village, for the evaluation of a mobility hub, with the understanding that Washoe County would provide matching funds for the purchase.

Talk about 'thinking inside the box'! Just like ✨that✨ Fall has fallen and the Incline Spirits Barefoot Bar has been packed up for the season and will be stored in our secure lot until next summer. ???

NORTH LAKE TAHOE FIRE PROTECTION DISTRICT REMINDS RESIDENTS TO ‘LEARN THE SOUNDS OF FIRE SAFETY’ DURING FIRE PREVENTION WEEK
The North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District (NLTFPD) is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA®)—the official sponsor of Fire Prevention Week for more than 90 years—to promote this year’s Fire Prevention WeekTM campaign, “Learn the Sounds of Fire SafetyTM.” This year’s campaign, October 3-9th, works to educate everyone about simple but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe.“What do the sounds mean? Is there a beep or a chirp coming out of your smoke or carbon monoxide alarm? Knowing the difference can save you, your home, and your family,” said Lorraine Carli, vice-president of outreach and advocacy at NFPA.

NLTFPD encourages all residents to embrace the 2021 Fire Prevention Week theme. “It’s important to learn the different sounds of smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. When an alarm makes noise—a beeping sound or a chirping sound—you must take action!” said Jennifer Donohue, Fire Marshal. “Make sure everyone in the home understands the sounds of the alarms and knows how to respond. To learn the sounds of your specific smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, check the manufacturer’s instructions that came in the box, or search the brand and model online.”

NLTFPD wants to share safety tips to help you “Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety”

A continuous set of three loud beeps—beep, beep, beep—means smoke or fire. Get out, call 9-1-1, and stay out.
A single chirp every 30 or 60 seconds means the battery is low and must be changed.
All smoke alarms must be replaced after 10 years.
Chirping that continues after the battery has been replaced means the alarm is at the end of its life and the unit must be replaced.
Make sure your smoke and CO alarms meet the needs of all your family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities.
NLTFPD will be hosting station tours for our elementary school students next week focusing on home fire safety and the importance of recognizing the sounds of fire safety.
