Great news! The Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California announced that it has completed the purchase of more than 10,000 acres of ancestral land in the Sierra Nevada, marking the largest tribal land return ever completed in the mountain range and the third largest in California. 🌄

Tribal leaders and conservation partners said the acquisition restores ecologically significant Washoe homelands to tribal ownership and represents a major step toward addressing generations of displacement.

The Thunderbird Lodge, Lake Tahoe, Nevada. George Whittell Jr. broke ground on the property in 1936. Did you know that his father was the founder of PG&E? With his inheritance, George Jr. purchased most of Lake Tahoe’s Nevada shoreline at just $81 per acre.

“Hooded” is something of an understatement for this extravagantly crested little duck! Adult males are a sight to behold, with sharp black-and-white patterns set off by chestnut flanks. Females get their own distinctive elegance from their cinnamon crest. Hooded Mergansers are fairly common on small ponds and rivers, where they dive for fish, crayfish, and other food, seizing it in their thin, serrated bills. They nest in tree cavities; the ducklings depart with a bold leap to the forest floor when only one day old!

Here's some more Winter Olympics History: According to the race requirements established by the Federation Internationale de Ski (FIS), the dukMéʔem wáťa (formerly known as General Creek) area in Sugar Pine Point State Park was significantly modified in 1958 and 1959.

The Sixth Army, encamped nearby, built roads and target ranges and cleared the trails 16-20 feet wide. The soldiers built five log and cable bridges to span dukMéʔem wáťa.

Timing and aid shacks were placed every 5 kilometers; the shacks were linked with telephone cable. The work was done before winter set in, so the courses could be raced without danger, even with very little snow.

This Robin-sized bird has notable white spots on its black wings with bright rufous sides and a white belly. Its striking red eyes are noticeable through binoculars. They forage primarily by hopping along the ground and scraping away leaf litter. During the summer, males will sing from shrubs and low trees; they can be skulky and elusive.
