Here's some more Winter Olympics History: According to the race requirements established by the Federation Internationale de Ski (FIS), the dukMéʔem wáťa (formerly known as General Creek) area in Sugar Pine Point State Park was significantly modified in 1958 and 1959.

The Sixth Army, encamped nearby, built roads and target ranges and cleared the trails 16-20 feet wide. The soldiers built five log and cable bridges to span dukMéʔem wáťa.

Timing and aid shacks were placed every 5 kilometers; the shacks were linked with telephone cable. The work was done before winter set in, so the courses could be raced without danger, even with very little snow.

"Before sunrise at Diamond Peak Ski Resort, the forecast read that it would be another chilly, windy day, with a storm in the forecast. Most would wait until the sun rose over the Eastern Sierra to even think about heading out for a day on the slopes.

For Lila Lapanja, it was just another training morning.

She was first taught to ski by her father, Vojko Lapanja, an Incline Village resident and a former Slovenian National Team racer. He put skis on her when she was about two years old at Diamond Peak, helped her develop her skills in her early years, and coached her through her youth racing with the Diamond Peak Ski Team.

After-school sessions meant 30–40 gates per set, 10–12 runs before dinner, edges tuned, more advice from Dad, then back at it the next day. By her teens: podiums at nationals. By her 20s: World Cup starts, hundredths of seconds separating wins from “almost,” to the Olympic stage.

Lila was named to the U S Ski Team at the age of 16, then switched to the Slovenian National Team, leveraging her dual citizenship to pursue new opportunities. New flag, same math: run margins measured in hundredths, same relentless passion.

Her father wasn’t just a parent on the hill — he shaped her early racing technique, instilled a strong ski racing foundation, and continues to be a mentor as she competes internationally today.

Overseas, she still pictures those crystal-clear mornings, one more lap, with big Lake views and big vertical dreams."

This Robin-sized bird has notable white spots on its black wings with bright rufous sides and a white belly. Its striking red eyes are noticeable through binoculars. They forage primarily by hopping along the ground and scraping away leaf litter. During the summer, males will sing from shrubs and low trees; they can be skulky and elusive.

Tahoe! Come join us March 6–8 for the first stop of Patagonia's Human Powered Snow Tour, a grassroots gathering of the snow-sliding community.
Their ambassadors will be leading a weekend of party laps, hangouts and gear fixin’, from a group ride at Palisades Tahoe ski resort (@palisadestahoe), to a day touring in the Tahoe backcountry with Nick Russell (@nick_russelll) and Alpenglow Expeditions (@alpenglowexpeditions), to a night of sharing stories at Truckee’s Alibi Ale Works (@alibialeworks). Connor Ryan (@sacredstoke) and Zahan Billimoria (@zahanbillimoria) will also be presenting “Terrain Between My Ears,” a deep-dive discussion about risk management in the backcountry and how to enter the mountains with a naturalist mindset--right here at evo Hotel Tahoe City.
The Worn Wear crew will also be at the Patagonia Palisades Tahoe store all weekend, so bring by any clothes (of any brand) that need fixing. You can even learn some repair skills yourself, and trade in lightly used Patagonia gear for store credit.
