The 20th annual Dummy Downhill is this Sunday (March 20th) and we can’t wait to see all the creative dummies fly and crash hard! The Tahoe Prosperity Center is pleased to share the second of three reports as part of our Envision Tahoe, economic recovery and resiliency plan, funded by the US EDA. A few highlights:
* Tahoe residents – regardless of their specific location around the Lake or individual situation – are unified in their concern that housing, traffic congestion, and other visitor impacts pose the biggest threats to the quality of life in the Tahoe Basin.
* 2020 U.S. Census data shows that Tahoe median home prices have tripled in nine years, from $345,000 in 2012 to $950,000 in 2021, while the number of housing units has only increased by 1%. Compared to updated income data, there are zero homes presently listed for sale in Tahoe in a price range that is affordable to a person or couple earning a median Tahoe area wage of $53,000.
* Natural Beauty, Lifestyle and Recreation Make Tahoe a great place to live: Strong majorities of residents cite Tahoe’s natural beauty (75%), its outdoor mountain lifestyle (61%), and unique access to outdoor recreation (58%) as the most important factors that make Tahoe special.
*Solutions Should Prioritize Housing, Tourism Fees, Transportation, and Restrictions on Second Homeownership: 79% of respondents said that expanding economical housing opportunities for workers should be a “very high” or “high” priority. 75% said priority should be on imposing public access fees on tourists to pay for investments in the environment, transportation, and community services.

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — This year, on Jan. 5, there were high fives, whooping and hollering on the UC Davis research vessel. New Year’s Eve had long past, and everyone had driveways full of snow waiting to be shoveled at home. Why the festivities?

The reason for the celebration was “clear.” The first lake clarity measurement for 2022 was just taken and the Secchi disk was visible at an astounding 138 feet below the lake surface. That is the second deepest measurement recorded since routine monitoring started in 1968, the best being 142 feet on Feb. 8, 1968. It is worth noting that a majority of TERC’s sampling team had not even been born at that time and the current, aging research vessel had yet to be built.

What did this measurement signify? Had the lake’s clarity been restored? Had the devastating fires and smoke from just a few months earlier somehow jolted the system back half a century? Read more at the link below.

As we wrap up our pile burning efforts for this season, we would like to say THANK YOU to our community for your support and cooperation over the past four months as we conducted pile burn operations. We thank you for your patience and understanding with the short-term smoke impacts, realizing that improving forest health and fire safety are the long-term benefits.

In addition to our community, we would also like to say THANK YOU to our agency partners Incline General Improvement District (IVGID), Nevada Division of Forestry (NDF), Nevada Division of State Lands (NDSL), NV Energy, and US Forest Service (USFS) for successful coordination and support in meeting our overall objectives to provide for public fire safety and forest health improvement.

Our statistics for the 2021/2022 field season to date:
98 acres hand thinned
153 acres pile burned
NV Energy – 1400 poles, 55 powerlines right of way acres treated
Chipping – 271 residences
Defensible Space Evaluations – 812 inspections conducted with 314 compliant

With spring around the corner, we anticipate starting up our curbside chipping and defensible space evaluation services in May. Please visit our website for updates and to sign up. Another key component to creating effective defensible space is to ensure the built environment, as well as the non-combustible area of your home, is free of fire hazards. Please refer to the Home Vulnerability form that may be included if needed, during the defensible space evaluation. Jimmy was a friend of mine. He was blind, but often saw more than I did. He was nine when he walked up to my lifeguard stand, introduced himself, and asked me to teach him how to swim. I taught him how to swim and he taught me how to see. He taught me how to read braille and see with my fingers. He told me the color red was the sound of trumpets blaring, and I heard color for the first time. He cared nothing about the color of skin, and asked me to read him Alex Haley’s Autobiography of Malcom X that was just out, and from reading that book together, well, we grew alongside each other.
