Homewood Handcrafted Designs Under the Pines
Homewood Mountain Resort celebrates Independence Day with Homewood’s Handcrafted Designs under the Pines, the first of two back-to-back arts and crafts fairs taking place Saturday through Monday, June 30 - July 2, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. This free event brings together an exciting group of more than 30 artists showcasing an assortment of collectable arts and crafts in a variety of media including paintings, ceramics, jewelry, woodwork, photography and much more. This year’s featured artists include:
Jewelry
As a young girl, Carol Dekle of Lotus, California loved to adventure in the Sierra Nevada Mountains exploring the hidden depths of caves, catching tiny creatures at the bottom of streams, and collecting crystals and rocks. That was the beginning of her love affair with the natural world. She further developed a love of earthy colors and rich textures in her work as an interior designer, which ultimately led her to create jewelry. “Starting my own jewelry business allowed me to combine both vocations to create unique wearable pieces of sculptural art,” says Carol. “I’m inspired by rich, luxurious textures, earthy colors and patterns, and the sinuous lines of the Art Nouveau style. My current work is a culmination of years of adventurous discoveries using different techniques and experimenting with various mediums.”
Painting
Inspiration has always come to painter Bill Monaghan from nature in all its’ variations: animals, water, desert, mountain and the human form. Hailing from Santa Rosa, California, he paints outdoor and landscape images. Bill uses a palette knife to create his oil paintings “en plein air” -- painting in the open air, on location, to capture truer colors and light. “My wife Kit and I love to go on scenic drives, whether it’s the local back roads or our annual two- or more week trips to different areas and National Parks throughout the US and western Canada, always sketching, painting and taking lots of photos.”
Handcrafted Santas
Richard and Shelie McCall began making Santa dolls in 1989 to give as gifts to his friends and thus began their art and passion for creating the Santas en masse. Creating these magnificent Santa dolls from their home on Mt. Tamalpais in Marin County, California, the McCalls sell the dolls nationwide to individuals, gift galleries, doll shops and boutiques. Richard creates the forms: sturdy, freestanding wood-and-metal armatures and Shelie sculpts the head, hands and face from polymer clay. Shelie also uses her skill to create Santa’s costumes with fabrics that have a vintage feel.
Ceramics
Nancy Liston from Gardnerville, California makes hand-painted ceramic platters and plates of the scenic mountain west and beyond. She specializes in capturing scenes from specific vacation spots onto a beautiful ceramic shape with destinations including Lake Tahoe, Sun Valley, The Broadmoor Hotel and more. “May these pieces remind you of great memories of beautiful spots around the country for years to come," says Nancy.
