Historical Talk & Book Signing: "The Era of the Family Resort"

Gatekeeper's Museum, Historical Talk & Book Signing: "The Era of the Family Resort"
Event Description:

Join us for our historical talk series featuring stories from local authors and historians. Carol Van Etten will be hosting a talk which explores Tahoe's resort history, a time when local families owned and operated resorts along Tahoe's shores. Take a step back to the 1920's and 1930's to learn what Tahoe was really like close to 100 years ago. Book signing to follow.

During the decades of the 1920s and 30s, Tahoe’s west shore was dotted with mom-and-pop ventures catering to the growing middle class, whose new mobility (thanks to the rise of the private auto and improving roads) led to the establishment of numerous enterprises aimed at capturing their business. Cell phones, the Internet and Next Day Air were the stuff of a
distant future, and the resulting isolation of resort guests required that these resorts be self-contained, providing a wide range of services, amenities and merchandise onsite. Carol’s talk will paint a picture of life in that beautiful time before the World came rushing in.
