Deadline to Apply: Summer Writing Workshops
For over 50 summers, the Community of Writers has brought together poets and writers for two separate weeks of summer writing workshops, individual conferences, panels, and discussions of the craft of writing. Our aim is to assist writers to improve their craft and thus move them closer to achieving their goals.
The Poetry Workshop will be held June 21-27, 2025. The program admits seventy serious poets into the week-long program. Directed by Griffin Poetry Prize-winning poet Brenda Hillman, this program fosters poets as they produce new work each day. This year’s teaching staff poets are Anthony Cody, Forrest Gander, Jane Miller, Gregory Pardlo, and Evie Shockley.
The Writers Workshops will take place July 7-14, 2025, and admits up to eighty-six fiction writers, and twenty-four nonfiction and memoir writers. Led by a members of the teaching staff, writers meet in small daily workshop groups to discuss their submitted manuscript. The 2024 teaching staff includes esteemed fiction and nonfiction writers as well as prominent New York literary agents, and editors working in publishing today. Manuscripts submitted with workshop applications may be novel excerpts, short stories, essays, memoir excerpts, or narrative nonfiction excerpts. Lectures and panel discussions on the craft of writing, as well as publishing, are offered daily, in addition to staff readings.
The deadline to apply for both programs is March 10, 2025. Some financial aid is available, including scholarships for participants from the greater Sacramento region.
