Can you feel the start of the winter season in the air?

The Truckee region truly transforms into a winter wonderland once the snow begins to blanket the landscape. You truly feel like you’re in a rustic snowglobe here, with the charming decorated downtown storefronts, snow-covered peaks and pastel skies.

Winter also brings on an abundance of beloved activities beyond traditional holiday events, and locals and visitors gather to ski, snowboard, ice skate, sled and cozy up by the fireplace after a long day in the snow.

Truckee truly has something for everyone, and below I have curated a list of activities to make this winter season your best one yet. Enjoy!

Downhill Skiing and Snowboarding

Truckee is an absolute dream for skiers and snowboarders of all ages and abilities. Truckee has its own local resort, Tahoe Donner Downhill Ski Resort, and it's close to internationally acclaimed resorts including Palisades Tahoe, Northstar California Resort, Sugar Bowl and Boreal, so you have plenty of options for an action-packed day with stunning views of the Sierras.

Tahoe Donner Downhill Ski Resort, located just minutes away from the historic downtown Truckee, is the perfect place for beginners and families. Featuring gentle terrain, affordable passes and dedicated instructors, this community-loved resort is perfect for first-timers and skiers looking to safely progress. This season, Tahoe Donner Downhill Ski Resort is excited to announce the reopening of its new lodge, which will include level lift access, a sun deck, ticket pick-up kiosks and a children's lesson area. You'll have everything you need conveniently located near the heart of Truckee!

Cross-Country Skiing

Escape the lift lines! Cross-country skiing is one of the best endurance workouts, and is great for all ages and abilities to experience. With Truckee's own locally loved Tahoe Donner Cross-Country Ski Center, and close to other world-class centers including Northstar, Royal Gorge and Tahoe XC, there are endless groomed trails to explore and build your skills with passionate and knowledgeable coaches.

Snowshoeing

If you'd like to explore vast network of snowy trails, snowshoeing may be the perfect option for you! There are many local options for all abilities to enjoy, from easier in-bound trails at the Alder Creek Adventure Center, to trails around Donner Lake to more advanced backcountry gems such as the Glacier Way Trails and Castle Peak (these are also great ski touring options).

If you decide to venture out into the backcountry, it is highly recommended that you have avalanche training and all the proper gear, including a beacon, probe and shovel.

Ice Skating

Head to the Truckee River Regional Park for a fun outdoor skating session at the beloved public rink. Here, you can find rentals and private lessons to improve your skills under the towering snow-covered pines. It's located right outside Truckee's charming downtown, so you can opt to wander the unique storefronts and enjoy a hearty meal after.

Just a short drive away from Truckee, Northstar California Resort has a magical ice-skating rink in the heart of the vibrant village. Children and families especially love this rink, and you can sit at the firepits or opt for a hot beverage at one of the many nearby cafes after your session.

Sledding and Tubing

Fun for the entire family! Sledding and tubing are  great ways to show the little ones the magic of winter without the stress of ski lessons or to have some fun as a "rest day" option. Tahoe Donner's Snowplay is a local's favorite and offers a safe environment to experience tubing and sledding lanes and play area to build snowmen, create snow angels and let your imagination run free in the winter wonderland.

Just outside Truckee, Boreal also offers Tahoe Tubing, a legendary 90-minute tubing experience complete with a magic carpet to take you back up the hill.

Want to escape the crowds? Grab your own sleds and head to Glacier Way Trails or West End Beach at Donner Lake.

Explore Downtown Truckee

After a day of snowy adventures, you're going to want to wind down and enjoy warmth, charming local storefronts and a flavorful meal. Head to historic downtown Truckee, where you will instantly feel transported right into a holiday movie scene. Here, the charming streets are illuminated by festive lights, and storefronts have whimsical decorations to spread seasonal cheer.

Wander the streets and check out the unique shops, art galleries, cafes and restaurants, most of them independently owned and operated. You will feel right at home as you get to know the diverse and vibrant community. Everyone is very welcoming and eager to share their love for the region with you.

There are also numerous events to catch, including the Truckee Art Walk, held on the first Saturday of each month, and Festive Fridays in December to help spread holiday cheer. Festive Fridays is fun for the whole family and includes a scavenger hunt, carolers and a surprise visit from Santa Claus.

I hope you have an amazing winter season and get to spend quality time with your loved ones! From fresh powder days on the slopes to peaceful snowshoe tours to laughing over a warm meal in a cozy establishment, Truckee has everything you need to be the perfect basecamp for adventure, relaxation and making memories.

Tips From a Local

  • Plan ahead and check the weather forecast and road conditions before you head out. Make sure you have chains and know how to use them.

  • Have the appropriate layers for the weather and the activities you want to do. Bring gloves, extra socks and hand and foot warmers.

  • Stay hydrated, eat nutrient-dense meals and get a good night of sleep to help decrease symptoms of altitude sickness.

  • If you’re going to the ski resorts or Nordic centers, I always recommend getting a season pass or day pass deals ahead of time to save money and ensure you get your ticket.

  • If you’re going into the backcountry, make sure you check the conditions and have avalanche safety training and the appropriate gear, including a beacon, shovel and probe.

  • Bring your camera, make amazing memories, and leave no trace.

  • Most importantly, have fun!
