There are places that invite you to slow down and reconnect with yourself, and Lake Tahoe’s West Shore ranks exceptionally high on that list.
Along the sparkling shores from Tahoe City to Emerald Bay awaits a quieter side of Lake Tahoe, a region where towering pines and white sandy beaches seamlessly blend with charming cabins and a storied past. It’s where locals escape during the busier months, and visitors with a sense of adventure explore hidden lakeside gems and off-the-beaten-path trails.

Whether you’re planning your first visit to Lake Tahoe or looking for a little getaway, I’ve come up with the perfect West Shore weekend itinerary for you to unplug, relax, explore, reset and hopefully be inspired to come back for more. Turn off your notifications and enjoy!

Day One: Afternoon Arrival, Beach Stroll and Sunset Dinner
Welcome to the West Shore!
After you’ve settled into your hotel or vacation rental, it’s time to check out the pristine shoreline and timeless feel of Tahoe’s laid-back West Shore. Let’s start out in Tahoe City, the stopping point for many visitors to the region. Here, you will find accessible beaches and a plethora of shopping and dining options.
Head to Commons Beach, a favorite for locals and visitors. You will find a beautiful sandy beach with shallow blue waters, perfect if you’d like to cool off or go for a short swim. This family-friendly beach also features a lush lawn area with picnic sites, a playground and an aquatic recreation rental area including kayaks and paddleboards.
Tahoe is known for epic summer sunsets, and you can watch one right from your dining establishment. A few that really stand out to me, establishments that offer high-quality and creative dishes, incredible views and unparalleled service: Christy Hill, Za’s Lakefront, Sierra Surf Club and Jake’s on the Lake. Please keep in mind that Jake’s is scheduled to close in October this year.
After your meal, head back to your lodging for a good night of sleep. Tomorrow will be a busy and rewarding day of adventure!

Day Two: Trails, Beaches, and Delicious Dining
If you’re feeling brave, start your morning with a sunrise plunge in the lake. Head to Commons Beach or pull over at a little scenic beach on Highway 89 as you make your way to breakfast.
For a delicious meal to fuel up for the day, FireSign Cafe always hits the spot with an extensive menu and cozy vibes. This award-winning cafe is a favorite for locals and visitors, and fills up fast, so I highly recommend arriving early. Another great choice is Rosie's Cafe, a longtime Tahoe City family favorite with a menu as eclectic as its decor and something to please every palate.
After your meal, it’s time to get in some miles and epic views. Head south to the Vikingsholm parking lot, where you will hike a portion of the Rubicon Trail from the historic mansion to Calawee Cove. This 11-mile, out-and-back trail features insane views of Emerald Bay, Fannette Island, stunning crystal-clear coves and notable peaks including Freel and Tallac.
If you feel like 11 miles might be too long, opt to hike down to Vikingsholm and enjoy spending time by the lake and opt for a tour of the historic estate.
After a long day on the trail, some time at the beach always hits the spot. I highly recommend Meeks Bay or Sugar Pine State Park. Meeks Bay offers instant access to a white sandy beach with turquoise waters, picnic sites and aquatic recreation rentals. Sugar Pine State Park offers beaches, hiking trails, picnic sites and historic mansions. You can’t go wrong with either choice!
For dinner, make your way to Sunnyside for a satisfying meal by the lake. This year is Sunnyside’s final season under their management, and they’re inviting you to spend time with them before they symbolically “pass the torch” to new leadership. Sunnyside is known around the lake for incredible dining options, drinks, views and vibes, so enjoy a piece of true Tahoe living with a meal here.
If you're a night owl, head to Pete 'n Peters Sports & Spirits, Tahoe City's original sports bar and hotspot with pool tables, shuffleboard and darts. But don't stay out too late: I have another adventure planned for you tomorrow before you head back home!

Day Three: Morning Hike, Lunch on the River and Afternoon Departure
For your last day, let’s start the day with a short and steep hike with the reward of some of the best views on the West Shore. Head to Eagle Rock for a morning hike to catch some sunshine, sweeping postcard-worthy panoramic views of Lake Tahoe and a great workout.
After you’ve worked up an appetite, head to The River Ranch Lodge and Restaurant for a delicious meal on the patio with scenic views of the Truckee River. Here, you can watch the rafters come in while you enjoy items off their extensive menu, including sandwiches, tacos, nachos, hot dogs, salads, sides and drinks.
If you have time after your meal, enjoy a nice stroll down the Truckee River Bike Path, a paved pedestrian and bike-friendly, paved trail along the river offering incredible views and places to stop and take a cool plunge.
I hope you had an amazing trip. Come back soon!
