Make Lasting Memories in Tahoe-Truckee: Your Guide to Family-Friendly Summer Fun

By Kirsten Alexis | Saturday, June 6, 2026

Tahoe-Truckee is the ultimate summer destination for families seeking a blend of outdoor adventure, fun attractions and a stunning landscape. With seemingly endless hiking and biking trails, beaches, campsites and marinas, the Tahoe-Truckee region is the ideal natural playground that all ages can enjoy and create core memories for years to come.

As a child who was fortunate enough to have Tahoe as my home away from home, I can still remember the excitement of spending time at my favorite big blue lake with my family. Our days were spent kayaking or boating on the lake, wandering our favorite trails, rafting or biking along the Truckee River, playing mini golf and barbecuing on the patio to end the action-packed day.

Whether you’re visiting the region for the first time or are coming back to keep the summer tradition alive, there are endless opportunities for outdoor adventure, leisurely activities and kid-friendly attractions. Below, I have curated a guide to help you plan a memorable trip to Tahoe-Truckee. I hope you have the best time ever and come back soon!

Lake Days

Lake Tahoe is the crown jewel of the region and offers more than postcard-worthy views. Here, you can visit a variety of beloved beaches, including Sand Harbor, Kings Beach, Commons Beach, Zephyr Cove and Meeks Bay, offering sandy shores, unique boulder formations and sparkling waters to swim and recreate in. Many also offer picnic tables, campsites and nearby restaurants or markets so you can really maximize your time spent there.

Outdoor recreation is a huge pastime for the locals and visitors, and there are many accessible places to rent kayaks, paddleboards and boats to take your lake days to the next level.

There are also other beautiful alpine lakes to explore, including Donner Lake and Fallen Leaf Lake, which offer beaches, campsites, nearby trails and a place to unwind and reset your soul. I highly encourage making a point to visit various beaches and lakes to experience different aspects of the region throughout your trip.

Hit the Trail

The Tahoe-Truckee region is home to a vast network of world-class hiking and biking trails, and there is something for all ages and abilities to enjoy.

One of my go-to recommendations for families is the East Shore Trail, a pedestrian and bike-friendly path that connects Incline Village to Sand Harbor via a relatively easy paved trail with postcard-worthy views at every turn. Here, you can spend all day exploring attractions, including Secret Beach and paths that lead to rock outcroppings on the lake, perfect for taking a midday swim.

If you opt to bike here, Flume Trail Bikes offers a variety of bikes and e-bikes conveniently located near the parking lot of the Incline Village trailhead and Tunnel Creek Cafe.

Another trail that families love is the Truckee River Bike Path, an easy trail along the Truckee River for bikers and pedestrians. Here, you have the chance to explore the region between Tahoe City and Palisades Tahoe on a peaceful path by the river’s edge. I highly recommend bringing a lunch and bathing suit so you can fuel up and cool off on your breaks. If you need a bike, Truckee River Bikes has a shop conveniently located near the trailhead.

Exploring the South Lake Tahoe region? Anderson’s Bicycle Rental offers the largest collection of bikes on the South Shore with cruisers, road bikes, e-bikes and trailer attachments. Located at the start of a National Forest Bike Trail, you will be safe from car traffic, offering peace of mind as you explore the trails with your loved ones.

If you'd like to try an e-bike, South Lake E-Bikes offers an accessible and exciting way to explore South Lake Tahoe with their collection of electric bikes for all ages.

Other notable hikes in the region that are accessible for all ages include Martis Valley Trail, Taylor Creek Trail, and Vikingsholm Trail.

Kids Summer Camps

Nothing says summer more than a day camp in the wilderness with arts and crafts, outdoor recreation, fun activities and opportunities to make lifelong friends.

From June 15 to August 21, Palisades Tahoe offers a Kids Adventure Camp, an immersive and engaging experience led by passionate counselors to connect with nature, create and recreate through activities including hiking, climbing, scavenger hunts, field games, crafts, yoga, flower pressing, disc golf and more.

Northstar California also offers an immersive summer camp, with five-day age-appropriate day camps to give children an appreciation of nature and a chance to build skills and memories. Beginning June 22 and running through August 14, there will be two separate kids camps offered. Ages 4 to 6 will focus on arts and crafts and an introduction to exploring, while the camp for children ages 7 to 12 will focus on building skills including first aid, rescue and trail safety and etiquette.

Mini Golf

As a child I loved ending the day with dinner and a mini golf session with my family. Bonding over a fun competition is a great way to make memories, celebrate a hole-in-one and mostly laugh about how terrible our skills were.

Magic Carpet Golf, located in Carnelian Bay, offers whimsical courses and an indoor arcade. Kings Beach Miniature Golf is another great option for the North Shore and offers a fun environment for all, centrally located to stores and dining.

On the South Shore, head to Magic Carpet Golf for a creative and immersive round all ages will enjoy.

Tahoe Treetop Adventure Parks

Take your adventures to new heights at Tahoe Treetop Adventure Parks, located in Tahoe City, Tahoe Vista and Olympic Valley. Each park was designed to connect guests to nature and themselves as they push past their comfort zones while simultaneously exploring and learning about the beautifully forested areas.

Each course offers exciting features, including rope swings, bridges, ziplines, swinging logs and nets to overcome as you navigate your way through the trees. These courses not only create lasting memories, but also help with problem-solving, cognitive abilities, teamwork and bonding. It’s a win-win!

Road Trips

One of my favorite things to do during my summer trips in Tahoe was driving around Lake Tahoe. We could visit different beaches, get our energy out on the trails, witness wildlife and fuel up at our favorite restaurants.

While I always encourage planning out your day to ensure you can see everything in a timely manner, I also encourage spontaneity and imaginative pit stops. Some of my favorite memories were from getting out at random sights and running around a new place. Most times, the best adventures we have are the simple ones, the unplanned ones and the ones where we can just let go and let our imaginations shine. The Tahoe-Truckee region is full of whimsical places that bring the imagination and desire for exploration to life, and I hope that can be passed down for generations to come.
