Explore Tahoe-Truckee on Two Wheels: Where to Rent Road Bikes, Mountain Bikes and EBikes

By Kirsten Alexis | Sunday, May 31, 2026

Summer is upon us here in the Tahoe-Truckee region, and the trails are open for endless exploration and adventure. One of my favorite pastimes is exploring these trails from a bike. Here in Tahoe, you have a wide variety of options based on your preference and ability. From charging down challenging terrain on a mountain bike, to cruising on a paved path on the shores of the lake on a road or e-bike, the opportunities for sightseeing and a great workout are endless.

Over the past few years, we have also seen the rise in popularity of e-bikes, which offer a new way to experience the trails via battery-powered pedal assistance, making it easier for some to tackle new terrain and avoid getting tired after a long day on the trails or road.

Whether you’re seeking challenging terrain or a leisurely lakefront stroll, I have curated a list of popular bike rental shops below to help you find the perfect bike for your adventure.

Have fun, be safe and leave no trace!

Truckee River Bikes: Olympic Valley, CA

Truckee River Bikes is back for the summer season! Offering the largest variety of bikes in the North Lake Tahoe and Truckee region, Truckee River Bikes offers road bikes, cruisers, mountain bikes, and e-bikes for all ages and abilities.

For its location near the Truckee River Bike Path, you can easily access one of the region’s most stunning bike paths once you grab your bike. You have many options, such as riding to Palisades and exploring Olympic Valley or heading down the Truckee River Bike Path and riding into Tahoe City and either west to Tahoma and Sugar Pine Point State Park or east to Dollar Point and Carnelian Bay. You can make a whole day out of it, so I highly recommend making your reservation for as early as possible!

The Flume Trail is one of the most iconic and most sought-after mountain biking destinations in the region. Featuring some of the most jaw-dropping panoramic views of Lake Tahoe, towering pines, boulders and adrenaline-pumping trails, the Flume Trail is perfect for mountain biking enthusiasts seeking a blend of challenging trails and unparalleled natural beauty.

Owned and operated by Max Jones, a two-time National Mountain Bike Champion and Mountain Bike Hall of Fame Member, Flume Trail Bikes offers a wide variety of premium mountain bikes, alongside a convenient shuttle service to the Incline Flume Trail, Tyrolian Downhill and Tahoe Rim Trail. Due to construction, the shuttle service will only be in operation for weekends in June, and they are hopeful to get back to seven days a week come July.

They also offer a great selection of road and e-bikes, which can be used on the stunning East Shore Trail, a relatively flat paved trail enjoyed by all ages and abilities that goes from Incline Village to Sand Harbor. Here, you can enjoy a relaxing yet exciting day along the shores of Lake Tahoe and explore beaches and scenic attractions along the way.

Tips From a Local

  • Make reservations in advance if possible and arrive early to avoid traffic and parking complications. Summer is an extremely busy season, and I always recommend planning ahead to make your experience as enjoyable and stress-free as possible.

  • Put safety first. Always be aware of your surroundings, wear a helmet and follow the rules of the road.

  • Know your abilities and know your bike. This will help you stay comfortable and safe on the trail.

  • Wear SPF, bring layers and stay hydrated. High UV exposure and high altitude can make you dehydrated quicker, and it’s important to stay hydrated, fueled and rest when needed to ensure you have enough energy throughout the day.

  • Bring a camera. The views are incredible!

  • Leave no trace and have fun!
