4 Upcoming Must-Do Lake Tahoe Events

By Shanie Matthews | Monday, June 13, 2022

Summer is nearly upon us. With the coming of warmth comes an opportunity to enjoy Lake Tahoe at its fullest. For many, summer is a favorite season for enjoying all that Tahoe offers. From hiking to biking, kayaking to paddleboarding, the outdoor activities are rich in diversity. But it's the events that really up the ante. From farmers markets to festivals, outdoor concerts to parades, the get-togethers that occur through the warmer months are something to be treasured.

To help make sure you are in the know, here are four must-do events on the upcoming calendar.

Silent Sky at Valhalla

In participation with Valhalla Tahoe, Silent Sky is a magnificent discovery of the starry night, as seen through the eyes of 19th-century astronomer Henrietta Leavitt and her fellow female researchers. The woman-strong cast portrays Leavitt and her team's discovery for measuring distances in space, which is still used today, as well as the revelation of the presence of thousands of stars within our galaxy. Through their voices, this play touches upon the strength, perseverance and light that connects us all. The show runs on Thursday, June 23, Friday, June 24, Sunday, June 26, Thursday, June 30, Friday, July 1 and Saturday, July 2. All showings begin at 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $25.

Local Heroes Parade

Calling all who want to celebrate our local heroes – join in the parade! In celebration of veterans, military personnel, firefighters, peace officers, teachers, healthcare workers and other community support staff, Incline Village Civic and Business Association and the Rotary Club of Tahoe-Incline are hosting a hometown parade in Incline Village. Community members and visitors are invited to participate by either being a part of the parade or spectating. If being in the parade interests you, they are looking for floats, classic cars, walking groups, street performers, musical groups, county groups, fire department and sheriff's office vehicles. If taking in all of the fun sounds more like your cup of tea, the best viewing is to be had on Southwood, across from Incline Bowl and on Incline Way by Incline Middle School and the Parasol Building as well as in front of the Rec Center and the Village Green. If you are interested in volunteering, they are looking for helping hands for the organizing committee, a parade route decorating committee, a float and participant committee and clean-up. The parade is on Saturday, July 2.

There's a whole lot of fun going on when rolling in the Local Heroes Parade.

Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival

Now in its 50th season, Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival is a season-long festival of extraordinary entertainment in an exceptional setting. This impressive nonprofit company presents and produces cultural events that bring theater, music and art into our everyday lives. But what makes it truly special is the setting. The festival offers the chance to be outside, enjoying the beauty of a sunset over Lake Tahoe while sitting on a sandy beach, sipping a favorite beverage and watching masterpieces in real time. You truly can't get better than that!

This year's lineup includes Much Ado About Nothing and Mamma Mia! There will be 26 actors in the full season, and it's the biggest acting company the festival has ever had. Many of the performers are in both productions, which play in rotating repertory with performances alternating every few nights. Starting the fun on July 1 will be Mamma Mia!, the hit musical based on smash-hit songs from the group ABBA. Much Ado About Nothing will come to life on the shores of Lake Tahoe beginning July 8. This comic tale of love, friendship and marriage is sure to delight. On Mondays, when mainstage productions are dark, the festival presents a seven-event Showcase Series that features the 8th Annual Prim Jazz Night (July 18), Queen Nation (August 15), Reno Philharmonic Orchestra (July 11 and August 8), Sierra Nevada Ballet (July 25) and Reno Jazz Orchestra (August 1 and August 22). Performance times are 7:30 p.m. For more information, click here.

The stage at Sand Harbor for the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival is like no other.

Jazz Camp Performance

Take in the impressive abilities of Moody's very own Jazz Camp while the instructors and students play to your delight. These musicians create mind-blowing music that is certain to make for a fantastic evening. Be sure to call ahead to book your table as seating fills up quickly. The jam sessions are on Tuesday, June 28 at 8 p.m.; Wednesday, June 29 at 7:30 p.m.; Thursday, June 30 at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, July 1 at 8 p.m.; and Saturday, July 2 at 8 p.m.
