Little Truckee River
Truckee River

DON’T FORGET TO PINCH THOSE BARBS, PLEASE PRACTICE CATCH & RELEASE ONLY! AFTER THE APRIL 29TH ALL CREEKS AND RIVERS WILL BE OPEN.

NOTE FOR THE WEEK: BANKER’S HOURS NOW! BEST FISHING WILL BE FROM 10-3! Daytime temps will be close to 60 degrees and lows in the morning will be quite cold in the lower 30’s! EXPECT CHANGES IN THE WEATHER AS WE ARE ANTICIPATING ABOUT A FOOT OF SNOW THROUGH THE WEEKEND! Flows from Tahoe City are in decent shape with flows picking up more below Donner Creek, and fish are willing to bite on well-presented offerings. GOOD DRIFTS ARE ESSENTIAL TO SUCCESS! Early fall fishing can still be difficult but keep at it!

TRUCKEE RIVER: Trout Creek to Stateline barbless Flies and lures only. NO BAIT! NO SCENTED LURES! CATCH & RELEASE ONLY PLEASE!!! 1000 FT BELOW TAHOE CITY TO TROUT CREEK IS OPEN AND IS UNDER GENERAL REGULATIONS!

Flows: Tahoe City 53.4 CFS LOW! Truckee (BELOW DONNER CREEK) 68.3 CFS, Below Martis Creek 90 CFS(Glenshire), Below Prosser Creek 168.2 CFS, Boca 374 CFS, Farad 463 CFS-water temps: 48-52 DEGREES!

BIG TRUCKEE: FLOWS HAVE DROPPED ABOVE BOCA AND FLOWS HAVE also DECREASED BELOW BOCA. With the current temps, in and out of the water, fishing has been stellar. Things will change on the weekend though as “Old Man Winter” returns! With the current flows and water temps, one will start looking to fish MODERATELY FAST water now. Trout this time of year, with the water flow stabilizing, will be found in the usual places such as seams and swift water during the day and middle and end of pools in the mornings and evenings! Get proficient with your nymphing techniques because the payoff could be one of the elusive big trout that reside in the T. From Boca, downstream to Stateline, flows are great and streamer fishing can still be effective. Fishing streamers below the Boca outflow will be more productive in the morning and evening hours. Don't discount Crayfish patterns as they are always a meal for a large trout. Fish them as if they are a traditional streamer in a fleeing or wounded fashion as they’re an easy target for large trout! 3x and 4x for streamer rigs, leaning more towards the 3x. If the streamer gig isn’t your thing don’t worry as there are still plenty of trout being caught on nymph rigs. Darker Stones, PMD’s, Caddis, October Caddis, and more prevalent hatches of BWO’s, Baetis, and Midges are all present on the Trout’s diet this time of year. For the purist, one can sit on the banks and wait for some nice fish to rise to PMD’s and BWO’s during the day and Caddis, October Caddis, Little Yellow Stones, and PED’s towards evening. On another note let’s all remember proper ethics and C&R techniques as temps have dropped. Let’s not play trout to exhaustion and handle minimally or not at all. Remember, there will be days where you'll do great and the next you'll get your you know what handed to you, it's the Truckee. To learn the river exponentially, hire one of our local guides. It's worth the money if you fish this occasionally or want to learn it's secrets! Great list of local guides on bottom of page!

LITTLE TRUCKEE RIVER: NO BAIT!!! NO SCENTED LURES!!! PLEASE BE CONSIDERATE OF OTHER ANGLERS AND THEIR SPACE! PLEASE DON’T FISH ONE SPOT FOR TO LONG. CATCH & RELEASE ONLY PLEASE!!! FLOWS: 76 CFS!

LITTLE TRUCKEE: With FLOWS going DOWN to a deplorable rate of 76 cfs on this stretch of water one should see waning activity, and light leaders and stealthy approaches will be required. Access is wide open here now and fish will be found everywhere throughout the system. Kokanee from Boca are now moving up the system to spawn and are being followed by the big Browns and Rainbows! This can be the best time of year to fish this system. Trout here will be feeding on a steady diet of Midges in the morning and then turning their attention to BWO’S, Baetis and some PMD’s throughout the day then to Caddis and midges again in the evening. Cloudy days can produce some great dry activity here! So, have all stages of these bugs in your box. The rule of thumb here has been 5x-6x depending on the situation. Fall backs to use are San Juan Worms when nothing else seems to work. Hint: the bigger fish in this system prefer emergers over adults most the time, so learn how to fish emergers effectively.
