Little Truckee River
Truckee River

IT’S NOV 16TH AND ALL CREEKS AND RIVERS WILL BE CLOSED UNLESS STATED OTHERWISE BY DFW REGS.

DON’T FORGET TO PINCH THOSE BARBS, CATCH & RELEASE ONLY NOW!

NOTE FOR THE WEEK: FLOOD CONDITIONS WILL BE EXPECTED FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS OR MORE UNTIL THE WEATHER CHANGES! Daytime temps will be close the mid 40’s to degrees and lows in the morning will be quite cold in the lower 30’s! EXPECT CHANGES IN THE WEATHER AS THE FORECAST FOR THE NEXT FEW WEEKS IS CALLING FOR SNOW/RAIN MIX! Flows from Tahoe City are LOW with flows picking up more below Donner Creek, and fish are willing to bite on well-presented offerings. GOOD DRIFTS ARE ESSENTIAL TO SUCCESS! Late fall fishing can still be difficult but keep at it!

TRUCKEE RIVER: Trout Creek to Stateline barbless Flies and lures only. NO BAIT! NO SCENTED LURES! CATCH & RELEASE ONLY NOW!!! 1000 FT BELOW TAHOE CITY TO TROUT CREEK IS CLOSED, AND YES THAT MEANS PROSSER CREEK IS CLOSED!

Flows: Tahoe City 94.5 CFS, LOW! Truckee (BELOW DONNER CREEK) 716 CFS, Below Martis Creek 996 CFS (Glenshire), Below Prosser Creek 1120 CFS, Boca 1310 CFS, Farad 1380 CFS-water temps: 44-46 DEGREES! FLOWS WILL CONTINUE TO GO UP UNTIL RAIN EVENT ENDS THEN FLOWS SHOULD START TO DROP. KEEP POSTED!!

BIG TRUCKEE: FLOOD CONDITIONS EXIST, FLOWS SHOULD MODERATE DAYS AFTER WEATHER EVENT. Use Your High Water Method during Flood Events. Things have changed in the weather as we will experience a wintery mix off and on for the next week or two. With the current flows and water temps, one will start looking to fish MODERATELY FAST water now. Trout this time of year, with the water flow stabilizing, will be found in the usual places such as seams behind large boulders, back eddies, middle of pools, or on the edges that drop into deeper water. Get proficient with your nymphing techniques because the payoff could be one of the elusive big trout that reside in the T. From Boca, downstream to Stateline, flows are great and streamer fishing can still be effective. Fishing streamers below the Boca outflow will be more productive in the morning and evening hours. Don't discount Crayfish patterns as they are always a meal for a large trout. Fish them as if they are a traditional streamer in a fleeing or wounded fashion as they’re an easy target for large trout! 3x and 4x for streamer rigs, leaning more towards the 3x. If the streamer gig isn’t your thing don’t worry as there are still plenty of trout being caught on nymph rigs. Darker Stones, October Caddis, and more prevalent hatches of BWO’s, Baetis, and Midges are all present on the Trout’s diet this time of year. For the purist, one can sit on the banks and wait for some nice fish to rise to Baetis, BWO’s and Midges during most the day. On another note let’s all remember proper ethics and C&R techniques as temps have dropped. Let’s not play trout to exhaustion and handle minimally or not at all. Remember, there will be days where you'll do great and the next you'll get your you know what handed to you, it's the Truckee. To learn the river exponentially, hire one of our local guides. It's worth the money if you fish this occasionally or want to learn it's secrets! Great list of local guides on bottom of page!

LITTLE TRUCKEE RIVER: NO BAIT!!! NO SCENTED LURES!!! PLEASE BE CONSIDERATE OF OTHER ANGLERS AND THEIR SPACE! PLEASE DON’T FISH ONE SPOT FOR TO LONG. CATCH & RELEASE ONLY NOW!!! LEAVE SPAWNING FISH ALONE!!!

FLOWS: 205 CFS!

LITTLE TRUCKEE: With FLOWS going UP to a GREAT rate of 205 cfs on this stretch of water one should see activity and less picky fish. Light leaders and stealthy approaches will still be required though. Access is wide open here now and fish can be found everywhere throughout the system. Kokanee from Boca are done spawning and now the Browns are taking their turn. Please leave these spawning fish alone and don’t wade through redds. Fishing to the Rainbows below the Browns is the way to go now. LEAVE SPAWNING BROWNS ALONE! Trout here will be feeding on a steady diet of Midges in the morning and then turning their attention to BWO’S, Baetis, and Midges again in the evening. Cloudy days can produce some great dry activity here! So, have all stages of these bugs in your box. The rule of thumb here has been 5x-6x depending on the situation. Fall backs to use are San Juan Worms when nothing else seems to work. Hint: the bigger fish in this system prefer emergers over adults most the time, so learn how to fish emergers effectively.
