Truckee River

DON’T FORGET TO PINCH THOSE BARBS, PLEASE PRACTICE CATCH & RELEASE ONLY! AFTER THE APRIL 29TH ALL CREEKS AND RIVERS WILL BE OPEN.

NOTE FOR THE WEEK: BANKER’S HOURS NOW! BEST FISHING WILL BE FROM 10-3! Daytime temps will be in the 50’S and lows in the morning will be quite cold in the upper 20’s! Flows from Tahoe City are in decent shape with flows picking up more below Donner Creek, and fish are willing to bite on well-presented offerings. GOOD DRIFTS ARE ESSENTIAL TO SUCCESS! Early fall fishing can still be difficult but one can start thinking about fishing anytime of the day now.

TRUCKEE RIVER: Trout Creek to Stateline barbless Flies and lures only. NO BAIT! NO SCENTED LURES! CATCH & RELEASE ONLY PLEASE!!! 1000 FT BELOW TAHOE CITY TO TROUT CREEK IS OPEN AND IS UNDER GENERAL REGULATIONS!

Flows: Tahoe City 63.3 CFS LOW! Truckee (BELOW DONNER CREEK) 89.8 CFS, Below Martis Creek 126 CFS(Glenshire), Below Prosser Creek 198.6 CFS, Boca 411 CFS, Farad 479 CFS-water temps: 58-60 DEGREES!

BIG TRUCKEE: FLOWS HAVE DROPPED ABOVE BOCA AND FLOWS HAVE also DECREASED BELOW BOCA. With the current cold snap, we just had and the touch of snow two weeks ago, temps have dropped also and with that fish have become more active! With the current flows and water temps, one will start looking to fish MODERATELY FAST water now. Trout this time of year, with the water flow stabilizing, will be found in the usual places such as seams and swift water during the day and middle and end of pools in the mornings and evenings! Get proficient with your nymphing techniques because the payoff could be one of the elusive big trout that reside in the T. From Boca, downstream to Stateline, flows are great and streamer fishing can still be effective. Fishing streamers below the Boca outflow will be more productive in the morning and late evening hours. Don't discount Crayfish patterns as they are in MOLT this time of year and can be effective. Fish them as if they are a traditional streamer in a fleeing or wounded fashion as they’re an easy target for large trout! 3x and 4x for streamer rigs, leaning more towards the 3x. If the streamer gig isn’t your thing don’t worry as there are still plenty of trout being caught on nymph rigs. Golden Stones, PMD’s, Caddis, October Caddis, Little Yellow Stones, BWO’s, Midges and PED’s are all present on the Trout’s diet this time of year. For the purist, one can sit on the banks and wait for some nice fish to rise to PMD’s and BWO’s during the day and Caddis, October Caddis, Little Yellow Stones, and PED’s towards evening. On another note let’s all remember proper ethics and C&R techniques as temps have dropped. Let’s not play trout to exhaustion and handle minimally or not at all. Remember, there will be days where you'll do great and the next you'll get your you know what handed to you, it's the Truckee. To learn the river exponentially, hire one of our local guides. It's worth the money if you fish this occasionally or want to learn it's secrets!
