Hiking + History = Donner Party Hike!

Exploring this region on interpretive walks and hikes, you can almost hear the clip-clop of oxen and the rumble of wagon wheels, as countless emigrants scaled the mighty Sierra Nevada in search of a better life. Learn about the success of the Stephens Party; the tragic events the Donner Party endured; and the importance of the transcontinental railroad.

Saturday hikes will begin and end at Sugar Bowl Ski area located on Highway 40 on Donner Summit. Choose one of the six hikes listed below. Guides lead groups of approximately 15–20 people to interpretive spots giving detailed historical information focused on emigrant and area history.

Retracing the steps of the Donner Party

In the afternoon enjoy music by Richard Blair, a hamburger lunch and Mark Twain portrayed by McAvoy Layne.

Hikers depart from 8:30–9:00 a.m. at the Donner Camp Picnic Area, located on Highway 89 approximately 8 miles north of Truckee. Walking tours begin promptly at 9:00 a.m.

The day begins with an interpretive walk where you will hear of the grueling travel and mishaps of the Donner Party and the archeological finds at this location. Participants will then drive to Donner Memorial State Park to view the Murphy Cabin Site and Pioneer Monument.

Participants are welcome to view the movie documentary and explore the Emigrant Trail Museum at the State Park, admission to the park is included for the remainder of the afternoon.

Join us for Saturday hikes, or Saturday and Sunday, and enjoy a weekend steeped in history and exploration. Put on your hiking boots, choose a hike and discover Truckee’s history!


Pre-registration required
Saturday hike cost is $75 per hiker; $85 after October 3. Saturday and Sunday package is $100 per hiker; $110 after October 3.
